Bursa Technical University's Turkish Language Teaching Application and Research Center (TÖMER) organized a visit to the Karagöz Museum for its students. This event brought together BTU TÖMER students, who come from different countries, to explore this important aspect of Turkish culture.

Cultural Enrichment for International Students

BTU TÖMER has become a popular choice among international students who wish to learn the Turkish language. In addition to its educational programs, TÖMER offers various activities and events designed to immerse students in Turkish culture. One of these activities was the visit to the Karagöz Museum.

The students had the opportunity to experience the museum, which was transformed by the Bursa Metropolitan Municipality in 2007 into Turkey's first and only Karagöz Museum. The museum showcases the rich tradition of Turkish shadow theater, an important part of Turkish culture.

The Karagöz Museum Experience

Accompanied by instructors Canseli Selçuk and İpek Ercanaslan, the B1, B2, and C1 level students toured the museum. The event was organized by Lecturer Yasemin Köksal Çakır, who introduced the students to Karagöz and Hacivat, the main characters of shadow puppetry in Turkish culture.

The students had the chance to watch a shadow play titled "Karagöz's Adventures", performed by professional shadow puppeteers. This performance gave them a deeper understanding of the traditional Turkish shadow play and its unique characters.

Cultural Learning Through Play

After the performance, the students learned about the role of the Hayali (the shadow puppeteer) in shaping the performances. The event encouraged students to participate by performing their own mini shadow plays. Through this fun and educational activity, students enjoyed learning while also gaining a deeper appreciation for Turkey’s cultural heritage.

This event was part of the BTU TÖMER Conversation Club course, which aims to enhance language skills and cultural understanding in an engaging and interactive manner.
